2005 Presenter biographies

Here are details of the presenters of prepared sessions in New York.

Diane Saliba Ault, consultant, is a long-time community organizer, activist and artist who is passionate about building community across lines of race, class and culture. She is regional leader of InterPlay in Nashville and is beginning her third year teaching the Leadership Program. Her group hosted the first International InterPlay Conference in the summer of 2004. She loves the simplicity and elegance of the InterPlay forms and delights in sharing them with others.

Randy Dixon has over 25 years experience and works throughout Europe, Down Under, the U.S. and Canada. His improvisational long form creations are performed worldwide. His book Being Present: Spontaneous Storytelling and the Art of Improvisation was published in German in 2000. He is Artistic Director of Unexpected Productions in Seattle.

Michele Flynn has most recently spent 14 years leading a statewide non-profit economic development organization. She has an extensive background in mental health, legal services and poverty elimination. Michele has gathered collaborations of stakeholders around social and economic justice issues including the rights of women, African Americans, those of limited incomes, and individuals with a disability. She is currently focusing on helping people to reclaim their original selves through improvisational storytelling, song and dance- engendering laughter and a sense of peace.

Sheree Galpert is principal of Future Stages, a consultancy that uses improvisation to focus on diversity, leadership development, communication, and conflict management. She has a Masters in Organization Development from American University/NTL, and is a member of the Actor's Equity Association and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.

Lynn Grasberg, CCO (Chief Comic Officer) of Humor Relations Associates, uses comedy/theater improvisation to present corporate diversity training and teambuilding programs, conflict resolution workshops for teens and adults, and performances of her one-woman diversity clown show. Her client list includes Seagate, Storage Tek, Lucent, HUD, EPA, and Iliff Theological Seminary,

William Hall has been performing, teaching, and making masks for over 20 years. His work combines commedia dell’Arte half masks, photo masks, as well as the use of the face as a mask. He has taught and created mask performances at Universities and for organizations with his business theatre company, Fratelli Bologna.

Paul Z Jackson is an author, consultant and training designer, whose classic books include Impro Learning and The Solutions Focus (co-author).

Michelle James, Principal of The Center for Creative Emergence and Quantum Leap Business Improv, is a business creativity catalyst. www.creativeemergence.com. Her programs have been featured on television and in publications. Michelle performs full-length completely improvised plays with Precipice Improv, founded the Capitol Creativity Network, and is co-coordinating an Improv-in-Business group.

Mary Kipp, consultant, author and executive coach, has a talent for engaging complex systems in ways that enable leaders and organizations to achieve enduring results. She engenders trust and is known for her candor, insights, humor and creativity. Clients have included Unilever Holland, Nortel Networks, PolyGram, British Airways, Cingular, Banana Republic and NATO.

Kat Koppett is the co-founder and president of StoryNet, LLC, a company specializing in the use of theatre and story in organizational settings. Her book, Training to Imagine: Practical Improvisational Theatre Techniques to Enhance Creativity, Teamwork, Leadership and Learning, was published by Stylus Publishing Inc. in May, 2001, and a global edition, Training Using Drama, published by Kogan Page in 2002. Kat has designed and delivered training for dozens of companies including Oracle, Cadence Design Systems, Morrison-Foerster, Kaiser-Permanente, Sun Microsystems, and Microsoft. Kat holds a B.F.A. in Drama from New York University and an M.A. in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University. She was instrumental in creating the corporate training wing of Freestyle Repertory Theatre, in New York, and developed and ran the Corporate Division of BATS Improv in San Francisco through 2004. She is currently at work creating Albany Theatresports in Albany, NY.

Warren Lyons, is a New York theatre producer and writer who has worked with Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Ethel Merman, Tony Bennett and Bernadette Peters. He won the New York Drama Critics Prize for his original co-production of The House of Blue Leaves. Warren’s experiences on and off stage convinced him that the healing power of music was not just in listening to singers, but in using one’s own voice. He became passionate about giving people back what he considers their birthright: the freedom to communicate fully without fear or self-criticism. He offered the first class in his Manhattan living room in 1977, and Joy of Singing!™ was born.

Patricia Ryan Madson, Emerita Professor of Drama at Stanford University, founded the Stanford Improvisers in 1991. She has taught workshops for The Gap leadership team, for Adobe Systems, Sun Microsystems, Apple Computer, and Hewlett-Packard. Her book, Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up has been published this year by Random House (Bell Tower).

Matthew Richter is the Resident Rogue Scholar for The Thiagi Group, and a co-founder of StoryNet, LLC. He is a facilitator, game designer, instructional designer, and consultant. Matthew has consulted with a myriad of Fortune 500 organizations, including Silicon Graphics, State Farm Insurance, Charles Schwab, Carolina Power and Light, Cadence Design Systems, Silicon Valley Bank, Xerox, The Sutherland Group, Guidant, and Olympus to enhance their overall productivity. He is a specialist in the areas of management, leadership, human performance technology, and, specifically, employee motivation. Matthew is a past President of the North American Simulation and Gaming Association (NASAGA), and has been invited back as an encore presenter by ISPI for his session, Creating a Motivating Environment. Among his many published works, Matthew is a featured author in The 2001, 2002, and 2003 Training and Performance and/or Team and Organization Development Sourcebook, published by McGraw Hill.

John Scaringi recently directed Get Happy - A Centennial Tribute To Harold Arlen. For ten years, he has worked in the production of STAGE (Southland Theatre Artists Goodwill Event), an annual benefit, starring performers such as Tyne Daly, Michael York, Stefanie Powers, Debbie Reynolds, Mary Wilson, Shirley Jones, Charlotte Rae, Carole Cook, and Tim Curry. He continues to direct and lead Leadership Development Workshops for business executives and artists alike - helping mine the creative and entrepreneurial voice in us all.

Lee Stickler is a Los Angeles actor who works in TV, theatre and film. He studied theatre and music at UMASS-Amherst, taught acting and voice at West Virginia University, where he earned his MFA in Acting, and helped found The Harrison Project, a theatre & film training collaborative and production company in Boston. He is a graduate of Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox, MA, and The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC. Lee is also a Level II Reiki practitioner and was drawn to Joy of Singing!™ to combine his love of music with the healing arts.

Montanez A. Wade, professional problem-solver, toastmaster, poet, and electrical engineer, is a builder of learning communities for underrepresented populations in science, mathematics engineering, and technology at Tennessee State University. Her passion is helping people find their purpose. Montanez is an engaging speaker who speaks from her soul.

Janine Waldman is an executive coach and trainer of coaches, who uses a solutions-focused approach for her individual and organisational clients.

Andrew Welch manages intellact, a successful consulting firm, and is Senior Lead Facilitator with the Delta Synergy Group, a leading corporate experiential training provider. He has appeared across North America as a presenter/trainer, and was a founding principal of Theatresports Toronto in 1982. In 2002 he created Canada’s only annual EE conference.
